The pha khao ma is the traditional multi-purpose cloth of Thailand’s rural northeast. Woven from lightweight cotton, Thai farmers use it as a towel, turban, belt or even pyjamas. We like to use it as a beach wrap, an insouciant scarf or the ideal photojournalist’s accessory for wiping away dust and sweat. The vibrant rainbow stripes serve as a nod to Pride Month, but the pha khao ma’s vibe transcends seasons.
