Northern Thai

Farmers’ Shirts

If Thailand’s northern region could be said to have an iconic item of clothing, this would be it. Known as suea maw hawm, these cotton shirts are worn by everyone from schoolkids to chefs, and it’s easy to see why: they’re tough, light, loaded with handy pockets and, because they’re dyed with real indigo, stains barely show, and they fade over time, just like a trusted pair of blue jeans. We’re offering shirts made by Mohom Ban PaLuang, a second-generation indigo dyer in the village of Ban Thung Hong, in Phrae Province, northern Thailand, and one of the only remaining producers who still dye with natural indigo.

We reached our funding target and products are being handmade now. Email us at ffsfantastic@gmail.com to check on next production or special orders.

We’ve made no changes to this light cotton, indigo-dyed shirt which buttons via a uniquely Thai knot-and-loop system – the perfect garment for fixing the car and a plate of laap or, perhaps more likely for most of us, fixing the deck and slamming a beer. The classic northern Thai farmer’s shirt is meant to fit a tiny bit loose – better to catch that elusive Southeast Asian breeze – and can double as a handsome over-shirt.

Northern Thai Farmers’ Shirts

Need a bit more protection from the elements than the traditional northern Thai farmers’ shirt is able to provide? Such as longer sleeves – but not quite long enough to get caught in the coals of your fire? Look no further. Like the original, this shirt is dyed with real natural indigo, and features a knot-and-loop buttoning system and lots of handy pockets, while the additional sleeve coverage makes it perfect for a chilly winter morning in Chiang Mai or a late summer evening in Vermont.
